Château-d'Oex
Capital of the hot air balloon, Château d’Oex has a ski area for Alpine and Nordic skiing. It produces the Etivaz AOC, a firmly-packed cheese, and is home to adventurer Mike Horn.
In January, thanks to its unique microclimate, over a hundred hot air balloon enthusiasts from all over the world meet at Château d’Oex for the International Balloon Festival. All year round the history of hot air balloons can be discovered at Espace Ballon as well as the first flight around the world in a hot air balloon which departed from Château d’Oex in 1999 with Bertrand Piccard and Brian Jones on board.
At Château d’Oex a fixed-rate for skiing gives access to over 250 km of runs, including all the runs of the Gstaad Mountain Rides and Glacier 3000 area. Carefully prepared, the downhill ski runs offer alternatives for every level. For the small fry the snow garden is the ideal place to learn to slide while having fun.
Snowshoe walking enthusiasts also have over 40 km of marked trails in the area, and for those who like speed, a 4.5km sledge run connects the upper Domaine de La Braye to the intermediary station. From Rougemont to Château d’Oex some 20 km of slopes lie at the disposal of cross-country skiers.
Families will particularly appreciate the winter sports offers in Rougement, all the more so as children under 9 are admitted free on the ski lifts and enjoy reduced accommodation rates.
