Joux Valley: a Far North atmosphere
The lakes of Joux Valley are set in a varied scenery consisting of forests, pastures and hills. This is the terroir of the vacherin Mont d’Or AOC, but also the cradle of the Swiss luxury watchmaking industry.
Set in a Canadian-type far north atmosphere, Joux Valley in the Jura boasts 250 km of cross-country slopes and marked hiking trails. Consisting of forests and pastures, Joux Valley provides silence and space to sport fans. The Nordic ski slopes and hiking trails cross the Jura Park, one of the largest nature parks in Switzerland covering an area of 500 square km, or Risoud forest, one of the largest in Europe.
Under the kindly protection of Dent de Vaulion (1,482 m), Lake Joux is a natural skating rink in winter and also attracts summer visitors for windsurfing, swimming, fishing or boating activities.
Joux Valley is the cradle of the Swiss luxury watchmaking industry, with reputed names such as Audemars PIguet, Blancpain, Jaeger-LeCoultre or Breguet, all reputed for their grande complication watches.
This is an ideal region for gourmets: namely the famous "Vacherin Mont d'Or AOC", invented on the pastures on Mont d'Or (1,463 m). This soft cheese, matured for at least 21 days, is easily recognised by its pine bark wrapping.
