Grape varieties, Chasselas prince of wines

Featuring an expanse – nearly 4,000 ha – and a diversity of soils, climate and orientation, the Lake Geneva vineyards surely present the greatest terroir variety. Chasselas (white) alone represents over two thirds of the local wine production.

Its character truly highlights the characteristics of the soil and the climate. Gamay, the second most important variety, contains the fruity notes of its native Beaujolais. Pinot Noir, its Burgundian cousin, which yields strong, full-bodied finesse wines, is a major competitor. Behind this main trio follows a small percentage dedicated to specialties such as Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc and Riesling/Sylvaner, or grape varieties that are specific to the Lake Geneva Region, such as Mondeuse, Plant Robert and Servagnin.

All in all, the Lake Geneva Region counts 28 appellations distributed over six regions AOC, each of which has its own topographical and climatological specificity.
